Feast of Saint Anthony of Padua, Priest and Doctor of the Church

Gospel Reading: MT 5:20-26

“whoever is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment”

Anger is only an emotion! Or so we say. Yet, Jesus says our very anger against our brother will make us liable to judgement. As all good doctors, Jesus treats the cause and not the symptom of a disease. Murder is the final outcome but the cause is unmitigated anger that has not been dealt with. That is not to say, we must not feel anger when something wrong is done to us. But what we do with that anger is very important. Jesus not only points out the cause, he also gives us the antidote. The antidote to anger is forgiveness. Our virtuosity or generosity counts to nothing if we are not willing to forgive.

It is important to note that Jesus doesn’t ask us to return with our gifts. He asks us to leave the gift at the altar. There is always the possibility that in our anger we may not only not forgive, but we may not even come back to make the offering. Worse still, we may turn our anger to God and never return. A lot of the people who have left the church, are people who are hurt or angry. They have not left their gift at the altar or have probably forgotten it there. May we be willing to come back to the church having forgiven each other and be willing to make an offering of our lives again.
