Gospel Reading: MT 5:38-42

But I say to you, offer no resistance to one who is evil

Today’s gospel carries in it one of the most revolutionary teachings of Jesus – Offer no resistance to the one who is evil. This teaching has been a challenge to the one who implements it and also a challenge to the one who is subjected to it.

It would be good to understand that over centuries, we Christians have often faced trials and persecutions resulting in situations where we have fruitfully used this teaching to testify to the Lordship of Jesus Christ in our life.

Though a Christian with faith can easily live out this teaching the faithless one struggles to be silent and often ends up resisting those who persecute. This is where we need to understand that the fear of pain, whether through physical assault or through mental harassment often drives us to react in ways that are more human than divine.

Our ability to foresee life, through logical assessment of situations can make us feel we are intellectually superior to handle life, but the fear it can bring into us has an equally devastating impact on our hold over our own emotions and thought processes. Only the one who dares in faith to trust the Lord will allow the Lord to respond and take control of the situation.

Isn’t it because we have stopped believing in Jesus as a living Lord who is still with us, that we feel it’s time to take things into our own hands and we finally end up as a defeated lot?
